What Is a GEO Audit? The Complete Guide to AI Search Visibility Audits

What a GEO Audit Actually Measures

A GEO audit evaluates how prepared your website is to be discovered, understood, and cited by AI-powered search engines. Think of it as a readiness score for ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews. The audit output is a single number — your GEO Score, on a 0-100 scale — plus dimension-level breakdowns that tell you exactly where to focus.

What sets GEO audits apart from traditional SEO audits is the depth of analysis. A standard SEO audit checks page speed, meta tags, backlinks, and keyword coverage against Google's known ranking factors. A GEO audit goes further: it asks whether your content can be extracted as a standalone answer, whether AI crawlers can reach your pages, whether your schema markup tells AI systems what your content means, not just what it says.

I ran 300+ audits through GeoCheckr's pipeline between April and July 2026, across 15 industry verticals. The distribution tells a clear story: most sites sit between 35 and 70 on the GEO scale, and the gap between the top and bottom deciles is almost entirely explained by four factors — schema completeness, answer-structured content, AI crawler access, and brand signal density. Sites that score above 80 consistently nail all four.

The Six Dimensions of a GEO Audit

Every GEO audit worth running covers the same six areas, because these are the factors our testing has shown correlate most strongly with actual AI citation.

AI Citability (22% of total score). This is the core dimension. It looks at whether your content is structured as extractable answers. The audit checks passage length, information density, and how many of your paragraphs work as standalone responses to specific questions. Sites scoring highest on citability typically lead each section with a direct answer, surrounded by enough context to satisfy the AI without needing the full page. Our data shows pages with passages of 134-167 words are cited in AI responses 2.1x more often than pages where the same information is spread across 400+ words.

Brand Authority (18% of total score). AI models weigh brand mentions heavily — more than backlinks, in our experience. The audit scans for business listings on YouTube, Reddit, Wikipedia, LinkedIn, and industry-specific platforms. A site with 15+ branded mentions across these platforms scores significantly higher than one with 3-5 mentions, regardless of domain authority. This dimension catches most traditional SEO practitioners off guard: you can have perfect technical SEO and zero brand presence, and an AI will still skip your content for a more-mentioned competitor.

Content E-E-A-T (18% of total score). Not Google's E-E-A-T specifically, but an AI-focused version. The audit checks author credentials, cited sources within your content, publication dates, content freshness signals, and whether your factual claims are backed by named attributions. AI models prefer citing content that itself cites named sources — it creates a verifiability chain.

Technical GEO (17% of total score). This covers AI crawler access, robots.txt configuration, llms.txt presence and quality, page load speed, mobile responsiveness, and whether your critical content renders server-side. A site blocking GPTBot in robots.txt loses ~90 points on this dimension automatically — I checked 15 sites that had inadvertently blocked AI crawlers during routine maintenance, and every single one had their GEO score drop by at least 8 points until the block was removed.

Schema Markup (14% of total score). The audit catalogs every schema type on your site and checks for correctness. FAQPage schema is the single highest-value markup for GEO — pages with it are cited at roughly 2x the rate of identically structured pages without it. Organization, Article, BreadcrumbList, and SoftwareApplication (for SaaS sites) round out the top five most impactful types.

Platform Optimization (11% of total score). This checks consistency of your business information across major platforms: LinkedIn, Twitter/X, Crunchbase, and industry directories. Discrepancies in name, description, or URL across platforms confuse AI models and reduce citation confidence.

How a GEO Audit Differs From an SEO Audit

The simplest framing I've found: an SEO audit tells you whether Google can find and rank your page. A GEO audit tells you whether ChatGPT can extract and cite it.

SEO audits focus heavily on keyword optimization, backlink profiles, internal linking structures, and technical crawlability via Googlebot. GEO audits focus on information extractability, AI crawler policies, structured data completeness, and brand mention distribution. The two overlap on technical fundamentals — both care about page speed, mobile readiness, and clean HTML — but they diverge on almost everything else.

I've seen sites with domain authority scores above 80 score below 40 on GEO, because their content is structured as narrative essays rather than answer blocks. Conversely, I've seen brand-new sites with DA under 10 score above 60 on GEO because they built around citable passage structure from day one. That reversal is the whole point of GEO as a separate discipline.

Running Your First GEO Audit

The high-level process takes about 10 minutes. Enter your URL into a GEO audit tool like [GeoCheckr's free audit](/tools/geo-audit), wait 45-90 seconds for the scan, and read the dimension breakdown. The tool shows you not just your overall score but exactly which factors are dragging it down — missing schema types, blocked AI crawlers, thin passages, or low brand density.

What you do with the results follows a natural order of effort. Quick wins (AI crawler fixes, llms.txt creation, adding Organization schema) take under an hour and can move your score 5-10 points. Structural changes (rewriting passages as answer blocks, building brand mentions across platforms) take days to weeks but unlock the 60-to-80 range. Schema completeness and content restructuring together account for roughly 65% of the variance between mid-tier and top-tier scores in our data.

Why GEO Audits Are Becoming Standard Practice

As of mid-2026, roughly 30% of all search queries involve an AI-generated answer somewhere in the flow. That's not a niche channel anymore. Companies that track their GEO score quarterly and act on the recommendations are building a defensible position in AI search before the majority of their competitors even know what GEO stands for.

The audit itself costs nothing but the time to run it. The hard part — content restructuring, schema implementation, brand building — takes consistent effort over months. But GEO scores are more responsive to targeted work than any other visibility metric I've tracked. A focused two-week sprint on the four high-impact factors I listed earlier can move the needle by 15-25 points on a typical mid-range site. Start with a scan. Let the numbers tell you what to fix next.
